Mapping the
Whole Human Brain at
Cellular Resolution

The Sudha Gopalakrishnan Brain Centre (SGBC) at the Indian Institute of Technology Madras is a pioneering research centre dedicated to high-resolution imaging and 3D reconstruction of the whole human brain. The centre has developed a state-of-the-art, experimental and computational platform for high-resolution tera-pixel imaging of ex vivo human brains. This centre was set up to drive brain research through advanced integrated neuroanatomy with the interface between the Neuroscience and Engineering disciplines. At SGBC, we study the whole human brain through multimodal imaging at cellular resolution, from structural MRI to histology.

Our Research Areas

Our research is focused on mapping the human brain across health and disease by integrating structural, molecular, and imaging data. Using a combination of histopathology, molecular techniques, and structural MRI, supported by advanced bioinformatics and neuroinformatics, we aim to characterise changes in brain architecture across development, injury, aging, and disease. Together, these approaches enable integrated analysis and interpretation of complex human brain data.
